Practical roadside guidance

Chicago Summer Car Preparation Checklist

Heat, stop-and-go traffic and summer travel stress tires, batteries and cooling systems. Inspect them before a warning light appears.

Before a hot-weather trip

  • Check tires cold and have cooling-system leaks or battery concerns addressed.
  • Check coolant only when the engine is cool, following the owner’s manual.
  • Never leave children or pets in a parked vehicle in the heat.

What to do

  1. Check tires cold

Use the manufacturer’s pressure on the driver-door placard, inspect tread and sidewalls, and check the spare or repair kit. Heat can worsen existing tire damage.

  2. Inspect the cooling system

With the engine cool, check coolant level and look for visible leaks. A mechanic can test the cooling system and inspect hoses, fans and the radiator.

  3. Check battery, belts and fluids

Have a weak battery or charging concern tested. Check engine oil, wipers, lights and air conditioning before a long drive.

  4. Plan for a breakdown

Carry water for people, a charged phone and an emergency kit. If the temperature climbs or steam appears, find a safe stopping place and shut the engine off.

Important limit

Never remove a hot cooling-system cap. Do not leave children or pets in a parked vehicle in summer heat.

How to reduce the chance of this happening

Monthly tire inspections and scheduled maintenance help prevent roadside trouble before a hot-weather trip.
